“Gamechangers” is a benefit concert inspired by Jackie Robinson; this is a musical celebration of past and current-day risk-takers and groundbreakers who provide inspiration through their courage, vision, and determination; a portion of ticket sales goes to support Bridge Over Troubled Waters Inc, an agency providing life-changing services for homeless, runaway, and at-risk youth. This concert will take place at the historic Meetinghouse of First Parish of Milton, 535 Canton Avenue.
Seventy-five years ago, on April 15, 1947, Jackie Robinson became the first African American to play in major league baseball in the modern era. This concert is designed to recognize and celebrate past and current-day risk-takers, groundbreakers, and boundary-shifters who, like Jackie, provide inspiration through their courage, vision, and determination. All kinds of songs will be presented, from jazz to opera. An opening set will feature rarely heard songs about players in the Negro Baseball League prior to 1947. Other songs will celebrate the lives of Rosa Parks, Dr. Martin Luther King, Harvey Milk, Georges Seurat, and others.
The singers on this program are Grace Allendorf, Sarah Joyce Cooper, Daon Drisdom, Jenna Rae Lorusso, Ari Nieh, Matthew Shifrin, March Steiger, and Ron Williams. The pianist is Timothy Steele. Many living composers will be featured, including Daniel Sonnenberg, Byron Motley, Rossa Crean, Grey Grant, Jake Heggie, and Juliana Hall. Narrators will be Lisa White and Jeff Stoodt.
